Eric Monnin Wins the 15th Edition

Ledro, June 21st, 2026 – Defeating France’s Ange Delerce with a clean 2-0 score in the final, Switzerland’s Eric Monnin has won the 15th edition of the OM International Ledro Match Race. This is the only event in Italy carrying points for the World Match Racing Tour, organized by the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro using its own club fleet of J/22 boats.

Although highly anticipated, the final between the top two performers of the Round Robin—who both closed the qualifying group stage with a 9-2 score—was far from guaranteed. While Monnin swept past the Netherlands’ Lennard Bal 2-0 in his semifinal, Delerce struggled against Italy’s Riccardo Sepe. Sepe, representing the 3V sailing club, was leading the tie-breaker match right up until the start of the final downwind leg. However, a botched gybe cost him the decisive point (2-1), handing the ticket to the final over to the Frenchman.

While the final itself proved to be a one-sided affair dominated by Monnin’s crew, Riccardo Sepe bounced back to secure third place. After winning his opening match against Bal and then conceding the equalizer, Sepe didn’t miss his chance to claim the final tie-breaker.

Sailor & Official Quotes

“It was a challenging event: Lake Ledro is beautiful but tactically tricky, especially with the unstable breezes we had over the last few days,” said Eric Monnin upon returning to the dock. “We faced very well-organized crews, and no result was taken for granted. Our strength, after getting through the Round Robin, was staying highly focused and winning every single match in the final phase. This is an important result both for morale and for the rest of the season.”

“The Ledro event confirms its status as a peak moment for international match racing,” stated Domenico Foschini, councillor for the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) responsible for match racing. “Once again this year, the regatta stood out for its high-level fleet of competitors, which saw our own representative, Riccardo Sepe, secure a brilliant podium finish against some of the world’s top specialists. Despite the organizational complexities of such an event, its success was guaranteed by the synergy between the organizers and the expertise of both the Race Committee and the umpires on the water. Their work, alongside that of the many volunteers from the Organizing Committee, adds immense value to this unique event on the Italian scene. It is for these reasons that, as a Federation, we support the Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro in continuing this important tradition—made possible by the excellent local area and its facilities—and we aim to organize an FIV training clinic dedicated to youth match racing by the end of the season.”

Closing Ceremony & Partners

During the prize-giving ceremony—attended by club president Gaspare Inglese, the Councillor for Culture and Sport of Ledro, Luca Zendri, the president of the XIV FIV Zone Giampaolo Montagni, and the vice-president of the Cassa Rurale di Ledro Anna Gnuffi—Eric Monnin’s team was awarded the brand-new perpetual trophy specially created for the OM International Match Race.
